Why is the Luftwaffe (German Air Force) flying low over Us?
During the 1960s and 1970s there were a very large number of Luftwaffe jet crashes. The Luftwaffe suffered a 36% crash rate for F-84F Thunderstreaks and an almost 30% loss of F-104 Starfighters. This created considerable public demand in Germany for moving Luftwaffe combat training centers away from Germany.
As a result, the Luftwaffe moved much of its training to Holloman AFB. In a unique partnership with the United States Air Force (F-104 pilots had already been trained at Luke Air Force Base, Arizona, since 1964). The USAF is paid for the use of Holloman. (Ed) New Mexico residents face what the German citizens refused. Everyone is happy except rural US citizens.
