How Much Will You Loose?
While this a taxpayer funded Department of Energy project, sited on private land, it will impact property values throughout Otero County, Eddy County and parts of Texas. The Borehole, by DOE’s own admission is about nuclear waste disposal. The words “nuclear waste” affect buyers of land, produce, cattle and tourism. The effect is not positive.
Should the nuclear waste disposal field “test” turn into a nuclear waste disposal site expect the value of the above stakeholders property to sharply decline.
Should an accident (see WIPP article HERE and another HERE) take place, property values might well approach zero, close to the radioactive area. It is a stretch to think of any scenario where the terms “nuclear waste” brings higher property value (including taxes for the county).
If drilling causes damage to the aquifer or earthquakes or gas leaks or . . . Property values will NOT go up.
If the Department of Energy condemns land for a nuclear waste dump Otero County will suffer greatly. adjoining land will decline in value. Just try to sell cattle from next to a nuclear dump.
Just the debate and uncertainty affects buyers and property values.
Will DOE reimburse property owners for losses?

The "Salt Basin Deep Borehole Research Project" is located on private property. We should not infringe on property rights.
We should have a say in our tax dollars.
The Department of Energy is asking “the community” to “consent” and agree to the project.
Refusing to consent does NOT harm private property rights. It is everyone’s right to have an opinion. DOE would have you believe saying “no” affects private property rights – wrong. We are not passing a law or regulation forbidding drilling the borehole! We are saying we just don't support it.
